The best ice cream in Locarno
A torrid day in the sun without a gelato? Unthinkable! In Canton Ticino ice cream is a delicious specialty, crafted from the finest ingredients. Alongside classic flavors such as vanilla and chocolate chip stracciatella, skilled ice cream makers offer delights such as red currant, concord grape, fig or passion fruit and surprise us with creations based on local produce like farina bòna (toasted corn flour) or sweet chestnuts.
Craft gelato in Canton Ticino is known for its creaminess. The texture must be smooth and without any chunks of ice. It’s not unusual for the small craft gelaterie to make the best ice cream. They may offer fewer flavors, but the taste and quality are unbeatable.
Gelateria Dolcevita, Locarno
Open secret: on hot summer days Locarno residents tend to flock towards Via Vincenzo d’Alberti 4. Located in a converted garage, Gelateria Dolcevita makes and sells its own specialties, notably farina bòna flavor. The vintage garden chairs set out for customers put the finishing touch to this highly original location.

Gelateria La Preferita, Ascona
Visitors will find Gelateria La Preferita tucked away in the maze of narrow alleys that wind up from the lakeside in Ascona’s historic center. Needless to say it’s a favorite with many local residents, tiny in size but offering some forty craft-made gelati.

The size is mini but the choice is maxi. In addition to stracciatella and pistachio, this craft gelateria offers Piedmont hazelnut, Amarena cherry, pineapple with basil and a variety of other flavors created for the discerning palate. There is also a range of strictly vegan flavors.

Gelateria Bar Tennis, Vira Gambarogno
The ice cream parlor with the best view in all the Canton is arguably on the terrace of the Bar Tennis in Vira Gambarogno. As well as gelati, the menu includes cold snacks and savories. Any excess calories can be burned off on the adjoining tennis courts!

Gelato alla farina bòna
In Contone, the family-run concern Mastro Lucibello produces a series of local products and gelati. One such is ice cream with farina bòna, made using toasted and finely ground corn flour. Farina bòna is milled in Valle Onsernone using traditional techniques.
Two recipies for gelato corretto (with liqueur) are very popular with grotto customers in Ticino: concord grape sorbetto with a splash of grappa from the same grapes; or walnut ice cream with nocino, a walnut liqueur. For those who’d rather have a non-alcholic gelato, there’s affogato, a scoop of vanilla ice cream floating in coffee.
