Monoh (ZH) – Band
Monoh is Zurich-based sitar player Roger Odermatt. With his solo project Monoh, he lets the sitar meet contemporary sounds and beats - a musical field that is surprisingly still largely unexplored. Among the instruments, the sitar appears to be like a queen. Because of her concise sound, rich in overtones, her voice is usually enthroned above everything else in classical Indian music. But what happens when this sound meets the means of electronic music: when effects alienate, expand or multiply it, when it is embedded in warm sounds from analog synthesizers or follows the pulse of a digitally produced beat? It is a questioning attitude behind the MONOH project: an unbiased search for a contemporary sound - and for deep immersion. Because these dreamy tracks, which are too epic for Ambient and too minimalistic for World Music, develop a subtle pull in which the listeners can easily lose themselves. This music most impressively unfolds its impact live. Effects and loops are controlled by MONOH in real time, while he is vividly playing spontaneous variations or even beats on the body of the sitar. Then the sound of this imposing instrument - which in itself resembles a small orchestra - shimmers in all its facets.
