The Locarno Industry Academy goes international!


Officially launched during the 2015 Festival del film Locarno in the context of its Summer Academy, the Locarno Industry Academy is a very practical shortcut to the independent films industry with a strong European and International dimension. The program aims at helping young professionals to get a better understanding of the present independent films industry’s challenges, as well as extending their network of contacts in the fields of international sales, marketing, distribution, exhibition and programming. Leading further its wish to extend its international dimension and build industry bridges between Europe and other continents, develop strong international initiatives the Locarno Industry Academy starts travelling abroad under the name of Locarno Industry Academy International.

A pilot edition will take place in Mexico during the Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia from 25 to 28 October, under the guidance of Marion Klotz (Locarno Industry Academy Project Manager) and Andrea Stavenhagen (Morelia Programmer and Industry Advisor).

The Locarno Industry Academy International in Morelia is the first foreign training initiative designed by Locarno, aiming at strengthening regional and international collaborations within the independent cinema industry circuit while considering the local as well as being adapted to the context and specificities of each market and territory.

The initiative will continue exploring Latin America thanks to a second mini-workshop next December in Brazil, in the frame of the BOUTIQUE event, in cooperation with Cinema do Brasil. The list of Brazilian participants and guests speakers will be announced in November.

“Given the long-standing relationships of the Festival del film Locarno with Latin America and the dynamism of the independent film production in those countries, it seemed natural to us to first develop our international initiatives in this region. We are really excited to start broadening the scope of the Locarno Industry Academy by exporting its concept thanks to with partners such as FICM Morelia and Cinema do Brasil. This is a wonderful challenge. Our common objective is to contribute to the development of a proactive, collaborative industry community within and outside those countries, offering a high-quality training program and networking opportunities to the new generation of Latin American independent industry players.

For the first pilot project of the Locarno Industry Academy International in Morelia, six young Mexican professionals have been chosen in the fields of distribution, VOD and exhibition representing companies such as Cinépolis, FilmIn Latino, Artegios Distribución, ND Mantarraya, Piano Distribución and La Ola, a newly launched niche films distribution company. Among the confirmed guests speakers are: Miguel Rivera (Cinépolis – Mexico), Diana Bustamante (FICCI Cartagena – Colombia), Nadia Dresti (Festival del film Locarno – Switzerland), Christoph Terhechte (Berlinale Forum – Germany), Charles Tesson (Cannes, Semaine de la Critique – France), Kim Hendrickson (The Criterion Collection – USA), Yissel Ibarra (FilmIn Latino- Mexico), Joseph Beyer and Marissa Laney (Sundance Institute – USA), Leopoldo Jiménez (Nueva Era Films – Mexico) and Leonardo Cordero, 2015 Locarno Industry Academy Mexican participant who has newly been appointed Distribution Manager for Cinépolis.
