The Locarno Industry Academy International goes to the Middle-East!
The Beirut-Locarno Industry Academy International officially announced: call for entries open from December 20th until January 26th.
In partnership with the Beirut based Metropolis Cinema, and with the support of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC), the Locarno Festival is proud to announce the launch of the first Industry Academy International in the Arab world to be held in Beirut (Lebanon), in the frame of the Beirut Cinema Platform professional meetings, from March 22-25, 2018.
The Industry Academy acts as a shortcut for a new generation of professionals entering the independent film industry, encouraging their progress, helping them to get a better understanding of the Industry’s challenges and broaden their network of contacts.
The Beirut-Locarno Industry Academy International aims at helping young industry professionals in sales, marketing, distribution, exhibition and festival programming, to understand the challenges of the independent movie industry both the Arab world and the International scene.
The first edition of the Beirut-Locarno Industry Academy International, supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Lebanon, will be held in parallel to the Beirut Cinema Platform professional co-production meetings, organized by Beirut DC and Fondation Liban Cinema and will welcome up to 8 participants from the following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
“The rapid expansion of the Locarno Industry Academy, born in Locarno in 2014, demonstrates the need, both on a European, as well as an American, Latin American and Middle Eastern level, to focus on the issue of distribution or visibility of auteur films. The immense offer of the audiovisual product and the various possibilities of usage offer the public multiple choices, at the expense of the classic circuit. Unfortunately, this is a worldwide reality: the public that follows auteur cinema to the movie theaters is rapidly decreasing. By offering a training program aimed specifically at young professionals, to enable them to understand the breadth and the various dynamics of the film industry more quickly, we act not only as accelerators, but also we create a new incubator of junior key-players who can exchange opinions and experiences, with the hope of recreating a new ecosystem that helps auteur cinema regain the right visibility". Nadia Dresti, Deputy Artistic Director and Head of International at the Locarno Festival.
The Beirut-Locarno Industry Academy International is the 6th international initiative of the Locarno Festival’s Industry Academy. The five other Industry Academy International programs held in Morelia, NYC, Thessaloniki, Sao Paulo and Valdivia have been developed in a common spirit, offering a unique training program, with a strong international dimension, while also addressing local issues and the specificities of each region.
