Frannie Avery, an introverted English Literature teacher in New York, witnesses an intimate event in a bar one night. Fascinated, she notices the tattoo of an ace of spades and the number 3 on the man’s forearm, but can’t see his face. When the woman from the bar is murdered near her home and Frannie is invited to cooperate with detective Malloy, she embarks on a torrid affair with him. However, she notices that he also has an ace of spades and the number 3 tattooed on his forearm…
