Piazza Grande: Crazy Midnight

Cecil B. Demented

USA, France  ·  2000  ·  35 mm  ·  Color  ·  88'  ·  o.v. English

A gang of misfits led by manic underground film director Cecil B. Demented kidnap the whimsical diva Honey Whitlock to force her to play the female lead in their anti-Hollywood picture.

The madcap chronicle of a kidnapping openly cocks a snook at Hollywood and all who support it – mainly white men in uniform. Melanie Griffith shows herself surprisingly ready for her star glamor to be debunked as she is transformed into the muse of a dirty, low-budget and bad-taste movie. Some twenty years before the current glut of sequels and remakes, Waters was already fighting the good fight against “film junk”.
