Those That, at a Distance, Resemble Another

United Kingdom, Argentina, Spain  ·  2019  ·  DCP  ·  Color  ·  67'  ·  o.v. Spanish/Portuguese/English

With an elephant’s tusk as the protagonist, the film meditates on the endless tactility of conservation.

They say you can tell a lot from a person’s hands: their lifestyle, their job and, if you’re a fortune teller, their future. In Jessica Sarah Rinland’s film, hands carefully guide artefacts and replicas on a cross-continental journey through conservation to display in museums, a space where time seems folded and new objects can represent the past. While an elephant tusk is carefully reconstructed, we are invited to consider how the real is shaped by time and labor.
