Lengmo weiyang lengmo (The Cold Raising the Cold)
In a chronically stressed society, a teenage spree killer is born. Based on a true story.
Is The Cold Raising the Cold a 21st-century artist’s answer to the anonymous violence in Alan Clarke’s seminal Elephant (1989)? Is it a searing reflection on dissociation in contemporary China? Or simply a disturbing cinematic stunt? However you look at it, the invigorating balance of jarring rawness and supremely controlled, beautifully observed tableaux in Rong Guang Rong’s first fiction feature suggests a filmmaker who will continue to surprise us.Nicholas Elliott
