Non è sogno (Not a Dream)
What do you feel inside yourself? That’s the truth. But don’t name it, because the moment you do, it will vanish. The performance of life. The world outside. Outside, in prison.
Filmed during a workshop in the prison of Perugia, the film takes Pasolini’s Che cosa sono le nuvole? and Cálderon de la Barca’s Life is a Dream as the starting point for an exploration of theatrical performance as revealer of truth. This is a recurrent theme in Cioni’s cinema, whose stylistic signature is obsession. Using fleeting images and accidental sound, he manages to capture things the mind has denied, building a bridge between the prison experience and the perception of “outside”.Daniela Persico
