In the Kashmiri mountains, a young woman, Meenakshi Iyer, and her baby are travelling by bus to join her husband. Before she leaves, a mutual friend introduces her to photographer Raja Chowdhury, who has undertaken to look after her during the journey. Meenakshi is from a rigorous Brahmin background, burdened by religious dogma and social taboos. Raja is Muslim, which for Meenakshi is tantamount to being the devil incarnate. Over the course of their journey, they are confronted with violent race riots, which lead the young woman to rethink the prejudices her traditional education has imposed on her.
