Adapted from Maxim Gorky’s The Lower Depths and first Indian film to win the first prize in Cannes, Lowly City centers on a fantastically wealthy and capacious landlord who lives in a palatial estate high up on a mountain while the poor toil and starve in the valley below. The villagers' hatred for the landlord is inflamed further by the fact that his sewage is dumped directly into the village, spreading a variety of diseases.
