Set amidst stunning Ukrainian winter landscapes and emerging feelings of alienation between people in a post-Soviet society, Stepne is the story of Anatoliy, a man who comes back home to take care of his dying mother. A meeting with his brother and a woman he loves makes him reflect on the choices he made along the way. And just before her death, the mother tells Anatoliy about a treasure…

As an artist, I was always interested in the topic of disappearance, departure and parting with something valuable. The silence of past generations about their history made me create this film – as a question of my country's Soviet past.

Come artista, mi interessa il tema della scomparsa, della partenza e della separazione da quanto è prezioso. Il silenzio delle generazioni passate sulla propria storia ha fatto sì che creassi questo film – come per interrogare il passato sovietico del mio paese.

As an artist, I was always interested in the topic of disappearance, departure and parting with something valuable. The silence of past generations about their history made me create this film – as a question of my country's Soviet past.

Als Künstler interessiert mich das Thema Verschwinden, Aufbruch und Abschied von etwas Wertvollem. Das Schweigen vergangener Generationen zu ihrer Geschichte lies mich den Film machen – als Frage nach der sowjetischen Vergangenheit meines Landes.

En tant qu'artiste, je m’intéresse au thème de la disparition, du départ et de la perte de ce qui est précieux. Le silence des précédentes générations sur leur histoire m'a fait créer ce film – comme pour questionner le passé soviétique de mon pays.
