It may seem like a family tree that revives the Locarno Film Festival’s main goal: fostering young talents. This is especially true for Pardi di domani, the section that focuses on short films and has been a first step in the filmmaking world for many directors who have since achieved worldwide recognition. To mark this, 14 renowned international filmmakers who have already been to Locarno in the past have accepted to act as godparents for this year’s competing directors. They did so by taking part in an online conversation, to discuss their work and exchange ideas and perspectives on filmmaking. The trajectories are significant: while they all started with short films, some of them went on to win the award for Best Director in Locarno (João Pedro Rodrigues in 2016, Damien Manivel in 2018), or at the Berlinale (Angela Schanelec in 2019). All this is part of the Locarno Film Festival’s genetic makeup, looking for signals in the present that will help us understand the future.
All conversations are viewable on the Locarno Film Festival’s website, by accessing the Pardi di domani program or the individual pages for the project attendees.
