Pathos Ethos Logos (Part 1: Pathos)

Joaquim Pinto, Nuno Leonel | Fuori concorso

Years later, their E agora? Lembra-me (2013) remains one of the most indelible memories of life and cinema in the minds and hearts of Locarno audiences. After seven years in the making, Joachim Pinto and Nuno Leonel return to the Festival with a stunning opera-world: Pathos Ethos Logos. Not a film, but a triptych that goes beyond the definitions and boundaries of the seventh art. A universe-cinema without form and with a thousand shapes, crossed by a subtle design that aims at the meaning of everything, over 10 hours of ecstatic viewing. Three women and three decades – 2017, 2028, 2037 – figures loosely inspired by Mary Magdalene, Vibia Perpetua, Vittoria Colonna and Simone Weil. A kaleidoscope of characters and situations that gradually connect, restless bodies and voices that ask questions, questioning themselves and reality, in an attempt to fully exist. The testimony of a boundless cinema, like a lamp lit in the darkness of mankind and history. Cinema as a search for God. The image is faith, the word is poetry, the time is a lyrical expectation for the divine manifestation in the world. A work full of glorious mysteries, epiphanies and miracles. Love and the inability to love, care for others and the renewal of consciences. Indifference and attachment, abandonment and hospitality, death and the inexhaustible celebration of being alive.
