UBS, Main partner of the Locarno Film Festival since 1981

50 years ago, the imagination of one person transformed a regular place into an iconic venue for many – now known as the Piazza Grande. With the 74th edition of the Locarno Film Festival, the big screen in the heart of Locarno is making its comeback and lifts the curtain to experience the world through the lens of new and well-established filmmakers.  

Imagination means exploring without constraint, letting creativity flow and invent. Words that manifest our 40-plus year partnership with the Locarno Film Festival and particularly the realization of Locarno74. For 2021, we had one shared vision, to celebrate Swiss and international auteur cinema live this summer.  

In Piazza Grande, world premieres take center stage and so do their spectators. Since 2000, UBS is sponsoring the only official prize awarded by the public at the Locarno Film Festival. Everyone that has a seat at the screenings can vote for the Prix du Public UBS. I’m thrilled to announce that this year, for the first time, voting for one’s favorite movie can be done from anywhere, anytime during the eleven-day festival.  

Some dreams have no expiry date; the Piazza Grande returns exactly half a century later and the Locarno Film Festival is continuing to tell new and unconventional stories. Stories that stay with us long after.
