Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque)

Joann Sfar | Histoire(s) du cinéma

How do you recount the life of Serge Gainsbourg on screen? If you’re Joann Sfar, the cartoonist turned director, you go for a comedic, post-modern approach (the role of the famous singer was originally intended for his real-life daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg).

Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) is a joyous, inventive, funny exploration of the icon’s triumphs and insecurities, the latter being embodied by La Gueule (Doug Jones), an exaggerated caricature of the main character with a large latex mask for a head. Additionally, this year’s Excellence Award honoree Laetitia Casta steals the show with her hilarious portrayal of Brigitte Bardot, adding to the film’s charming levity.
