Online can be an opportunity. To reach audiences far away, who cannot be in Locarno in 2021, to discover a film, or to be discovered if you’re an emerging filmmaker. For these reasons, we’ve decided to make a small selection of the Locarno74 lineup available to the online audience: two sections, Concorso Cineasti del presente and Open Doors: Shorts, for a total of 21 films that will be viewable on August 4-14 on play.locarnofestival.ch, thanks to the association with Festival Scope, one of Locarno’s partners in 2020.
We’ve decided to open up the section Open Doors: Shorts to audiences worldwide who won’t be able to come to Locarno. On August 4-14, 10 shorts will be available online for free, without time restrictions.
The screening room begins in Locarno and ends online. This is the idea behind the decision to offer the Festival’s Swiss audience the chance to remotely view ten films from the section Concorso Cineasti del presente. As the theaters are at reduced capacity this year, we’ve decided to virtually allow the widest audience possible to discover the first steps of new voices. It’s an online extension, restricted to the Swiss audience, of the cinemas that will screen the films in the city. How much? 5 francs per film, or 20 francs – the Piazza Grande bill! – to view them all. Here’s everything you need to know:
Films aside, the online Locarno74 universe has a lot more to offer. Like every year, the Festival website and the official Facebook page will provide the online streaming of most events at Forum @Rotonda by la Mobiliare (conversations, Locarno Talks by la Mobiliare, some Locarno Pro events, the Alberto Lattuada roundtable), all Piazza Grande ceremonies from the red carpet to the start of the screening, and the awards ceremony on August 14, live from the GranRex. Dozens of events, all in one place: www.locarnofestival.ch.
